Most Americans can name a famous entertainer or sports figure but can’t name their congressional district or representative.
The founding fathers of this country believed that our voices can improve the human condition. But when it comes to politics, many citizens believe their voices do not make a difference.
Citizens see in the news stories of corruption, lobbyists, and Hollywood portrayal of politicians, politics, corruption, and special interests controlling the U.S. Congress.
We the people, begin to believe it is a waste of time to write an email, visit our representatives, participate in a local town hall meeting, or even make a phone call to our local congressional leaders.
Thomas Jefferson once said, “We don’t have a government of the majority. We have a government of the majority who participate.”
Get involved! Don’t let the media decide for you what needs to be done. The news is basically a searchlight that focuses on important topics for a short period of time, then moving on to it’s next story. You will have to live with the outcomes of elections or legislation.
Decisions made by members of Congress are the result using their head to review policy and interpret data, then considering their own beliefs and values from the heart, assessing their political health from impacts, and feedback from those citizens who participate in the democratic process. As an example: Congress might hear more from an organization about the unethical treatment of a specific animal, than they hear from emotional and concerned postal employees about the impacts of working conditions due to no legislation. Which group do you think is going to have a stronger bond to the legislator?
The late Senator Everett Dirksen (R-Illinois Senate Minority Leader, 1959-1969) Once quipped,
“When I feel the heat, I see the light.”
EVERY CONGRESSIONAL LEADER IS THINKING:
Any constituent serious about their livelihood will organize all of my constituents to tell me what they think about important issues so I can make the right choice on Capitol Hill to support you and the democratic cause. Never forget, it’s the reason I was elected as your legislator. As a strong Union you guys/gals got your work cut out and it’s time for you to get busy if you want to see a positive outcome.
Please use email, letters, faxes, phone calls and office visits to tell us how a policy or other regulation affects you or a particular group. If your story is powerful enough to illustrate an injustice, ill, or some major impact on society we will compile the feedback and finish public action by translating it into meaningful legislation.
Your collective voices will make a difference and absolutely improve the human condition.
Abraham Lincoln said, “With public sentiment, nothing can fail, without it, nothing can succeed.”
A small group of citizens is the only thing that has ever changed the world.
